Toxic positivity, a term that has gained significant attention in recent times. It refers to the excessive and often unhelpful promotion of positive thinking and emotions, while disregarding or suppressing genuine negative feelings. It may seem surprising, but forcing ourselves or others to always maintain a positive outlook can actually have detrimental effects on our mental and emotional well-being. This is because toxic positivity invalidates the natural human experience of embracing the entire spectrum of emotions, including sadness, frustration, and anxiety.

Toxic positivity, while often well-intentioned, can create an unhealthy environment within the workplace. For example, imagine a scenario where a team member is facing a significant challenge, such as dealing with a difficult client or repeatedly missing project deadlines. While it’s important to maintain a positive attitude, a manager’s constant insistence on focusing exclusively on the positive aspects — “don’t worry, things will work out” or “just stay positive and everything will be fine” — can ultimately be counterproductive. Such a dismissive perspective denies the individual an opportunity to acknowledge their feelings, concerns, or challenges and inhibits them from seeking constructive solutions or support. In this way, toxic positivity can hinder growth and resolution, leading to a stagnation of both individual and team progress.

Maintaining a positive attitude in the workplace is essential, but it’s crucial not to fall into the trap of toxic positivity. To avoid becoming a toxic positive person, consider the following three suggestions:

First, embrace empathy by actively listening to others and validating their feelings, putting yourself in their shoes and understanding their point of view. This not only shows genuine care and respect but also fosters a more collaborative relationship with your peers.

Second, be realistic and acknowledge that setbacks and challenging moments are inevitable but offer constructive solutions instead of just an optimistic outlook. Providing genuine support and encouragement allows colleagues to feel more comfortable sharing their concerns and difficulties.

Finally, embrace a growth mindset that welcomes criticism and embraces learning from mistakes, as opposed to only focusing on success. By incorporating these practices, you can promote a healthy, supportive atmosphere in your work environment while effectively steering clear of toxic positivity.

The prevalence of toxic positivity in the workplace can have detrimental effects on employees’ mental health, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. It is essential for organizations to recognize and address this phenomenon, fostering an environment that encourages open communication and genuine support. By acknowledging individual struggles and genuinely empathizing with colleagues, employees can develop a healthier mindset and contribute to a thriving work environment.
